A contemporary response to Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame. Canadian composer Peter Togni simultaneously refracts, magnifies, challenges and refutes the austere voices of the Medieval masterpiece. Juxtaposing choral material, entirely written out, and the improvised interruptions of a bass clarinet, Togni assigns the role of time traveller to the clarinet, bringing Machaut’s fourteenth century into the heart of the twenty-first.
