Sanctuary Trio, featuring Peter Togni, organ; Jeff Reilly, bass clarinet; Christoph Both, cello; and special guest Dinuk Wijeratne, piano
St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg, NS
Presented as part of the St. Cecilia Concert Series, the chorale Herzlich tut mich verlangen forms the centrepiece of this special concert. Sri Lankan-born Dinuk Wijeratne is a conducter, composer and pianist. He is music director of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra and is St. Cecilia’s musician-in-residence for the 2010-11 season.
Much of Sanctuary’s music is based on Gregorian chant but uses improvisation, contemporary music atonality and extended techniques to create a new form of contemplative plainsong for the 21st century.
