John Chysostom was himself a famed speaker and prolific author of the early church\, as well as the Archbishop of Constantinople\, known for his emphasis on caring for the poor and less-fortunate in his homilies. Canadian composer Peter Togni simultaneously refracts\, magnifies\, challenges and refutes the austere voices of the Medieval masterpiece. Juxtaposing choral material\, entirely written out\, and the improvised interruptions of a bass clarinet\, Togni assigns the role of time traveller to the clarinet\, bringing Machaut’s fourteenth century into the heart of the twenty-first. \n
