True North – 2014

True_North

January 22, 2014 | Posted in Public Talks | By

The Arctic has always intrigued southern Canadians but nowadays with the issues of global warming, mineral development, the creation of Nunavut and sovereignty concerns over the Northwest Passage, the region  is even more on Canadians’ radar.

‘True North’ is a one-of-a-kind show combining improvised music by the well-known Nova Scotian musician and broadcaster Peter-Anthony Togni and colourful images of the Eastern Arctic by Nick Newbery, who spent more than 30 years in the Canadian North as a teacher and photographer.

The concept of ‘True North’ is to tell a story, mostly of the traditional Inuit world, covering themes not seen in the South, northern icons that flow into each other be they landscapes, ice & icebergs, flowers, inukshuks, shelter, equipment, clothing, travel, animals, hunting and fishing or the people themselves.

This series of pictures were taken in the Central and Eastern Arctic between 1975 and 2003. The display places emphasis on the land and traditional Inuit practices at the beginning of a period of radical change in the Canadian North.

The show’s format allows for an introductory oral overview beforehand coupled with a question and answer session afterwards, thus hopefully providing both an experience and an education for those attending.

Following presentations of ‘True North’ last year in Nova Scotia, three more are being offered in 2014:

Thursday 13 February     7.30 p.m.   SMU Art Gallery, Halifax
Saturday 15 February      7.30 p.m.   Denton Hall, Acadia University
Saturday 22 February      7.30 p.m.   Paul’s Hall, Glen Margaret
